The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog’s name doesn’t lie – it is indeed part dog, part wolf! Created for the Czechoslovak border guard in the late 1950s, the breed’s creator, Karel Hartl, wanted to improve the stamina and strength of working dogs by crossing German shepherds with Carpathian grey wolves.

The Czech Republic has given the world several interesting dog breeds including the Czech Terrier, the Czech Spotted Dog, the Bohemian Shepard or the Prague Ratter. Although the Czech breeds were created almost exclusively for practical reasons, such as hunting or guarding livestock, the breeding process often resulted in visually appealing dogs who turned out to be intelligent and loving companions. The Czech Terrier

The Cesky terrier, sometimes known as the Czech terrier or Bohemian terrier, is a small, agile dog, weighing in at no more than 10 kg. Even though it was created by inbreeding three related individuals, nowadays it is a very healthy and robust breed. It was internationally recognized by the International Canine Federation (FCI) in 1963.

The Czech Spotted Dog

The origins of the Český strakatý pes, known as the Czech Spotted Dog or sometimes the Bohemian Spotted Dog in English, are rather sad from today’s perspective. Originally known as Horák’s Laboratory Dog, it was bred in the 1950s for use in medical experiments. But from these unhappy beginnings, the world gained one of its most easy-going, low-maintenance, and sociable dogs.

Bohemian Mountain Dog

Český horský pes or the Bohemian Mountain Dog is the youngest and probably the least common of the Czech original dog breeds. It was bred in the late 1970s as a mountain dog and is an excellent companion for the outdoors. Despite its imposing look, it has a very friendly nature and is extremely devoted to its owners.

Bohemian Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon

The Český Fousek or Bohemian Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon was originally bred in the Czech Republic as a hunting dog. It is wirehaired and has the appearance of having a beard and mustache. A versatile pointer, Český Fousek has the qualities needed to hunt in the field, in the water and in the forest. These dogs are easy to train and very devoted to their owners.

Original Czech dog breeds: The Bohemian Shepherd

The Bohemian Shepherd Dog, along with the Prague Ratter, is one of the oldest Czech dog breeds. It was originally used as a guard dog and a herding dog. Apart from the globally popular dog breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, you can also spot breeds that originated in the Czech Republic.
